A UNIQUE TRAVELLING MUSEUM
As in previous years, this 2024 edition of the 1000 Miglia will take place over five days, from 11 to 15 June, and for the first time ever, the convoy will steer a course for Genoa. Over 400 historic cars are raring for the challenge: 71 of them are precious collectors’ items that participated in the original editions between 1927 and 1957.
THE STAR ATTRACTIONS
As in past editions, the star attractions are without doubt the cars, with over 400 dream machines forming a magnificent mobile museum that will travel through Italy's picturesque heartland. Also in attendance at the 2024 edition will be Stellantis, with Alfa Romeo and Lancia participating in the “Most beautiful race in the world” supported by the official Heritage team, which is entering three exquisite classic cars driven by crews comprising well-known faces in different fields, but united by their tremendous passion for motoring.
Lancia Aurelia B20GT: a Grand Tourer par excellence, with classic and timeless appeal. A supremely elegant model whose black bodywork is combined with interior upholstery in grey Lancia cloth, it is one of 500 first-series Aurelia cars that were produced in 1951. This specific car, belonging to the Stellantis collection and usually exhibited at the Heritage HUB, participated in the 1OOO Miglia speed race in 1954, finishing 12th overall and third in class, after having covered the entire Brescia-Rome-Brescia route in 13 hours, 9 minutes and 42 seconds. The Aurelia was the first Lancia model to enjoy remarkable success in international competitions, establishing itself both in road and track racing.
A car like this could only be driven by a top-notch crew. With a record of 17 victories and 40 podium finishes from 79 rallies, plus two World Rally Championship titles with Lancia, Miki Biasion will sit to the right of Savina Confaloni, the famous and respected automotive and lifestyle journalist, television presenter and author.
Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider: a prestigious prototype with hull designed by Franco Scaglione for coachbuilder Bertone and developed starting in 1900, it is the car that marked Alfa Romeo's post-war revival. The already sophisticated four-cylinder engine of the Alfa Romeo 1900 was tuned up and boosted to 138 hp. This power increase, combined with a weight of just 880 kg, allowed the prototype 1900 Sport Spider to reach a top speed of 220 km/h.
This very rare Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider from the Stellantis Heritage collection, based at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, has already participated in numerous re-enactments of the historic 1OOO Miglia, piloted by a succession of well-known personalities including Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman and American driving ace Derek Hill.
On board this Alfa will be retired racer Nicola Larini, who competed in various categories including Formula 3 and Formula 3000 before moving up to Formula 1, but most Alfa aficionados will remember him for his unforgettable victory in the DTM, the German Touring Car Championship, having outclassed the fiercest German contenders to win the 1993 title in the legendary Alfa Romeo 155 2.5 V6 TI. Larini has strong links to Alfa Romeo, from the 75 Turbo Evoluzione and the 155 GTA to the 155 V6 Ti “DTM” and the 156 in touring car championships.
Paired with Larini will be his friend Luca Ciucci, a passionate regularity racer and member of a public body linked to the motoring world.
Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint: a favourite of gentleman drivers in the Fifties and assembled by the Touring Superleggera atelier in Milan, it also derives from the 1900 but is equipped with a tuned-up engine, designed to give just the right adrenaline rush to fans of performance. The 1900 Super Sprint was considered by drivers and private teams in its heyday to be an effective class-winning car: road holding, speed and reliability were the qualities that made it successful mainly in the Touring class, but also in the GT category with the Touring coupé.
For this edition of the “Red Arrow” race it will be driven by Andrea Farina, who is famous for his work with Motor1, a leading online automotive publication.
Accompanying him is Davide Cironi, a well-known face on the small screen, founder of Drive Experience, the number-one sports car channel in Italy.
THE STAGES
Five stages, over 2000 km, a thousand shades of Italy: as in 2021, the anti-clockwise route, adopted in 14 of the 24 editions of the 1000 Miglia speed race, includes intermediate leg finishes in Turin, Viareggio, Rome and Bologna before winding its way back to the customary end destination of Brescia.
